Augusta is situated on the extreme south western tip of Western Australia some 317 kilometres south of Perth. Augusta is in the South West region. Augusta has a population of approximately 1300 people.
Augusta was initially settled in 1832, however due to difficulties with timber cutting (the jarrah, although recognized as a particularly good timber was much harder than the timbers experienced by the European settlers) the settlement gradually declined until the mid 1850’s when the settlement was abandoned. The settlement was recommenced in the early 1860’s when government assistance was granted to the timber industry and two long jetties were built to assist with shipping of the timber sleepers. With the decline of the timber industry due to the lack of volume of forest area, the Augusta region became another of the Group Settlement regions and, unlike several of the more southern areas where karri forest was encountered, the Augusta region was more successful.
Today Augusta is noted for it’s agriculture, viticulture, fishing and farming, along with a healthy tourist industry.
