Cue is situated 654 kilometres north east of Perth in the Murchison region and has a population of 300. Cue was once the centre of the Murchison goldfields boasting a population of 10,000. The gold rush all began in the early 1890’s when an aboriginal prospector named Governor found a ten once nugget at Cudingwarra, about 15 kilometres west of the current townsite. Encouraged by this, other prospectors rushed to the area. One, Michael Fitzgerald along with his two aboriginal aids, found gold at the Kintore Blow, which is today virtually in the centre of Cue. In it’s first week, the Kintore Blow find produced 260 onces of gold.
Fitzgerald’s partner Tom Cue travelled the eighty kilometres to Nannine and registered the claim. This is probably why the town was named after him. In January 1892 a massive find was made at Day Dawn and the Great Fingall mining company commenced operations. For many years the premier gold mining company in Australia, Great Fingall closed Day Dawn in 1918. Today, the magnificent offices are the only remaining reminder of the gold rush past of Day Dawn. Today, Cue maintains both pastoral leases as well as gold mining operations.
