With a full-time population of around 1,500, Kalbarri’s population swells dramatically during the peak tourist seasons. The first European settlers in Kalbarri were actually two mutinous crew members from the ship Batavia who have put ashore just south of the town in 1712. No more is really known of their fate. The Kalbarri area became popular in the 1940’s, with the first buildings appearing around 1948 and the townsite being gazette in 1951.
Kalbarri’s economy is almost totally reliant on tourism, with the town attracting some 200,000 visitors a year, and the population of Kalbarri swelling to around 8,000 during peak tourist season.
