Mount Barker is situated 363 kilometres south of Perth on the Albany Highway with a population of approximately 3,000. Named after the nearby hill, which in turn was named after Captain Colet Barker, Mount Barker was first settled in the early 1830’s. Farming & grazing were the main activities in the district during those early years, however with the opening of the Perth/Albany railway line in 1889.
The future of the town was assured. Orchards (mainly apples) were prominent in the period up until the 1960’s, however the area now boasts vineyards, sheep, cattle, plantation timber and tourism as it’s main activities. A quarry to the east of the town is one of only two sources of Mt Barker stone, the red variety of which was used in the construction of Aquinas College Chapel in Salter Point (Perth).
