Northam is situated 97 kilometres east of Perth at the junction of the Avon & Mortlock rivers. With a population of approximately 7,000, Northam is the largest inland town in WA which is not based on mining. The Northam district was first explored by a group of settlers led by Ensign Robert Dale in 1830. The town was named by Governor Stirling, however it’s importance was soon overtaken by York & Quairading until the arrival of the railway line.
Northam then became a popular departure point for explorers heading east from the Swan River Settlement. During the 1940’s and 1950’s, Northam was the site of the Northam Migrant Accomodation Centre which was built to specifically hose European migrants from the Baltic States, Yugoslavia, Belarus, Croatia, Italy, Poland, Belgrade among others. Many of these migrants eventually settled in the Northam district. Today Northam is a large commercial centre for the burgeoning farming industry within the district. Northam is also the start point for the Avon Descent boat race.
