Pinjarra district was established in the 1830’s and is rather dubiously known for the “Battle of Pinjarra” where between 14 and 40 Noongars were killed in a battle with white settlers.

This practice of sending children as young as five to the other side of the world on a promise of “sunshine and oranges”, was nothing less than despicable with, in certain cases up to seven members of the same family taken away. In 1974 an alumina refinery opened just north of Pinjarra, and still operates to this day, providing much vital employment for the region.
