Gnowangerup is situated in the Great Southern region, 365 kilometers south east of Perth with a population of 1300 persons.
First explored in the 1830’s by John Septimus Roe, the Gnowangerup area remained largely uninhabited until the 1850’s when pastoralists commenced grazing in the district. The first occupant of what was to become Gnowangerup townsite was Thomas Quinn who acquired land around the Aylmore Springs and used this to supply sandalwood cutters passing through the area. The township was gazette in 1905 and possibly more importantly, the first merino sheep arrived in 1908. Gnowangerup is still to this day renowned for the quality of it’s merino’s. In 1912 the railway line arrived, as with all other townships, Gnowangerup received a boost from this.

Soldier settlers (from WW1) were granted 640 acre lots in 1920, however, due to lack of experience, lack of money along with logistical problems, this scheme was somewhat less than a success. Today, Gnowangerup boasts a healthy farming community relying on wheat, sheep and other cereal crops. The Gnowangerup hotel is the home for a three meter tall wooden carving of Ned Kelly.
