Bridgetown is situated 255 kilometres south of Perth in the south West region, and has a population of approximately 2,800.
Nestled among rolling hills on the Blackwood river, Bridgetown was first gazette as a townsite in July 1868, along with an advertisement in the Government Gazette for 55 town lots at five pounds ($10) each. Timber milling and later orchards (largely apples initially) formed the backbone of the early Bridgetown economy.
In the late 1890’s, tin was discovered at Greenbushes (approximately 10 kilometres north) and this served to give the Bridgetown district a huge boost. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, the orchard industry declined, and this along with the decline in the timber industry caused the Bridgetown population to decline also. More recently, this decline has been reversed with Bridgetown now boasting an increasing population. Bridgetown is now probably best known for the annual Bridgetown Blues festival.
