The Capel district was first explored in the 1830’s when the Bussell families, along with James Stirling and James Hutt (the first two governors of WA) took up land in the area. The townsite of Capel was not gazetted until 1870, with lots selling some time later in 1897.
During the late 1950’s several mineral sands mines commenced in the district and, along with dairy ad grazing, formed the backbone of the community for many years. Today Capel still relies on farming, viticulture and to a lesser degree mining for it’s survival.
