Meekatharra is situated in the Murchison region 769 kilometres north east of Perth. With a population of approximately 1,400, Meekatharra is considered quite a large centre for the region. First settlement began around 1894 when the prospectors Porter, Soich and Meehan discovered gold which proceeded to bring gold seekers from many of the surrounding fields.
This gold discovery was short lived, but fortunately was followed by another find in 1899. In 1901 the state battery was opened, and in 1902 the township of Meekatharra was gazetted Today, Meekatharra still supports mining, as well as a reasonable size pastoral industry.
