The town of Carnarvon was gazette in 1891, and was named after Henry Herbert, the fourth Earl of Carnarvon. During the 1960’s Carnarvon was used quite extensively by NASA as a tracking station for its space exploration.

On land, mining (salt), sheep & cattle grazing and horticulture are the main pursuits. Carnarvon is very well known for its banana’s and mangoes, as well as vegetables during the winter months.
