Morowa is situated in the central Midlands district 375 kilometres north of Perth. With a population approaching 1,000, the name Morowa was first used in 1910 when describing the location of several rock water holes. The townsite of Morowa was gazette in 1913, however in 1921, the Railways department requested the town be renamed Merkanooka due to confusion between the names Morowa and Mullewa.
However, the Railways department failed to rename the rail siding, and due to pressure from the locals, the town’s name reverted some six months later. Today, Morowa is the home of a large wheat, sheep and farming area.
