The original Harvey townsite was commenced by private investors in the 1890’s but was not officially recognized until the 1930’s when the townsite was gazette.

These trenches were the product of “sustenance labour” during the great depression of the 1930’s. The Green family established an abattoir in the area which even today (although under new ownership), remains one of the largest export abattoirs in Australia. Harvey has also been the home of many dairy farms over the years, however since milk deregulation occurred, many farmers have turned their backs on dairying.
