Merredin is situated 261 kilometers east of Perth on the Great Eastern Highway, in the central Wheatbelt. With a population of approximately 3,000, Merredin also sits along the route of the goldfields pipeline. The history of Merredin differs from other Wheatbelt towns in that it commenced as a stop over for travelers to the goldfields.
The area was first explored in 1836 by John Septimus Roe, however, it was not until the assistant government surveyor Charles Hunt explored the area and realized the importance of water, causing him to build tracks from water hole to water hole, that Merredin gained importance as a stopover on the York to Goldfields Rd. In the 1860’s large numbers of pastoral leases were taken up, but no town was established until around 1890. This township was located around the Merredin Peak water hole but was hastily moved further south when the train line was not able to handle the hilly terrain around the Merredin Peak. Today, Merredin acts as the commercial center for the district which boasts a very large wheat and sheep industry.
